What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that causes pain in the muscles, joints, ligaments and tendons. Affected areas usually include the front of the knees and elbows, the hip joints and the neck. There is no cure for fibromyalgia, but there are many steps sufferers can take to make themselves feel better.

Treatment

Exercise can play a major role in alleviating the symptoms of fibromyalgia, along with reducing stress and improving good sleeping habits. It is important to proceed gradually, as too much exercise initially may worsen pain. Low–impact aerobic exercises such as swimming, stationary bicycling, or using machines that replicate a skiing motion are recommended. Stretching should be done before all exercising. Keep your activity level consistent – don't try to compensate for several days of inactivity by cramming too much exercising into one day. When you are comfortable exercising three or four times a week for 30 to 60 minutes per session, higher–impact exercises like walking, jogging, or tennis can be incorporated. Again, begin slowly and work up to a goal of a 60–minute session.
